Headstands: The ins and outs of being upside down

Saturday, February 11

Description

Headstand (sirsasana) calms the mind, improves circulation, strengthens the arms, legs and spine and strengthens the abdominal organs. It can also be one of the most challenging poses we attempt, conjuring up fears and limitations that we set within ourselves. The first time we do a headstand there is a rush of adrenaline followed by a feeling of absolute elation. Once the fear is over, the unbounded benefits of this inversion can start to work its magic.

Come explore headstand, learn the preparatory poses for this classical inversion, and develop the strength and confidence to attempt this pose as your practice progresses. Using key alignment principles, we will break down classic headstand, tripod headstand and straddle headstand. As we progress through the layers you will be able to understand and work from the place that is right for you and develop and refine your poses. After some instruction and practice, we will practice each of these within a flow so please come prepared to move and have fun! Turning upside down is an invitation to release your fears, sharpen the mind, strengthen the body and laugh in delight.

This workshop is suitable for beginners who have some familiarity with vinyasa yoga and for students with an established practice.
